Robin Rohlicek, Founding Partner and patent attorney

Robin’s ability to quickly grasp inventors’ technologies and their commercial significance, and to shape conceptual inventions into an effective patent strategy is trusted by the most selective R&D groups in early-stage and mature companies, as well as academic institutions.

There are three spheres of practice where a patent lawyer can demonstrate excellence and Robin is the rare practitioner who excels in all three:

  • The technical facility, creativity, and up-to-date knowledge to situate an invention in the context of prior art as well as academic and industry direction.

  • Appreciation of the importance of an invention in a client’s overall intellectual property portfolio and ultimate business strategy.

  • Skill in devising a patent prosecution strategy and drafting and prosecuting patent applications to achieve maximum protection and portfolio value.

As his professional experience and educational background show, Robin’s knowledge and facility in a wide array of cutting-edge technologies, particularly related to signal processing, machine learning, and software systems, allow him to keep pace with and meaningfully contribute to his clients’ development teams, and to guide them to an effective patent strategy.  He does not miss fine technical nuances, or fail to see the commercial significance of an invention, or waste his clients’ time in coming up to speed on technologies and industry relevance. His sophisticated technical skills have earned him a stellar reputation in the technology offices of top universities. All delivered with an infectious excitement and camaraderie that make it easy to see why he is so highly valued by his most demanding clients.

In the areas of AI and ML, Robin stays current on the technology and legal landscape as well as practical prosecution practice challenges. Robin has helped clients through the path to patent protection even when working in patent systems around the world that have difficulty distinguishing mathematically based and algorithmic innovations from those that are “abstract.”

Professional Experience

Following completion of his Ph.D. at MIT, Robin worked for a decade on speech and natural language technologies for both DoD and commercial applications including in the telecom and automotive fields, ultimately serving as Vice President of R&D and Vice President of Engineering at two Boston area companies.  Robin has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in statistical speech recognition and related areas of machine learning and has served on IEEE Technical Committees and as a reviewer for numerous journals and technical conferences.  He was a principal at Fish & Richardson before founding Occhiuti & Rohlicek.

mO&Re about me

When it comes to cutting-edge technology, I have always been “all in.” Starting with a high school internship coding on mainframe and mini-computers, through working in industry and research institutions with pioneers in communications, signal processing, and AI, to the present when I continue to code raspberry pi projects and tinker with AI problems in my spare time. Through these varied experiences I have developed a deep-rooted facility with diverse technologies fueled by the constant excitement of seeing how innovators envision new ways of doing things. Now as a patent lawyer, I learn from the smartest possible technologists in the widest possible range of areas. In return, I give my expertise in protecting their innovations. The thrill of mastering the nuances of new technologies and engineering solutions just never gets old!
